5 Early Warning Signs of Lung Cancer That Are Often Overlooked

By Robin McKenzieJune 26, 2024 Health

Lung cancer remains one of the most prevalent and deadliest forms of cancer worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer accounts for more deaths than breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers combined. One of the biggest challenges in combating this disease is that it often goes unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage. Recognizing the early – and often overlooked – signs will give you the best chance of fighting this disease.

1. Persistent Cough

A cough that lingers for weeks or even months can be a warning sign of lung cancer. While a cough is commonly associated with colds or respiratory infections, a chronic cough that does not improve with treatment should be evaluated by a healthcare provider. Especially concerning is a cough that produces blood or rust-colored sputum.

2. Shortness of Breath

Experiencing shortness of breath during routine activities, or even at rest, can be an early indication of lung cancer. This symptom often occurs when a tumor blocks or narrows an airway or if fluid builds up around the lungs due to cancer. Many people dismiss this symptom as a sign of aging or a less serious condition.

3. Chest Pain

Chest pain that worsens with deep breathing, coughing, or laughing can be a symptom of lung cancer. The pain may be a result of metastasis to the chest wall, ribs, or spine, or it could indicate the tumor’s pressure on surrounding tissues. Chest pain should always be investigated, especially if it persists or is severe.

4. Unexplained Weight Loss

Losing weight without trying can be a sign of several types of cancer, including lung cancer. The body’s metabolism may change due to the cancer’s presence, leading to unintentional weight loss. If you notice significant weight loss without changes in diet or exercise, it’s important to seek medical advice.

5. Hoarseness or Voice Changes

A persistent hoarseness or change in voice quality can be a symptom of lung cancer, particularly if the cancer is affecting the nerves that control the larynx (voice box). This symptom can be easily mistaken for a benign condition such as laryngitis, but if it persists, it warrants further investigation.

Treatments for Stage 3 and 4 Lung Cancer

When lung cancer is diagnosed at Stage 3 or 4, it is considered advanced and more challenging to treat. However, various treatment options are available, which may include a combination of therapies.

Stage 3 Lung Cancer

  • Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy: These treatments are often used together to shrink tumors before surgery or to target cancer cells that may remain after surgery.
  • Surgery: If the cancer is localized and operable, surgery may be performed to remove part or all of the affected lung.
  • Targeted Therapy: This involves drugs that specifically target cancer cell abnormalities and is often used if the cancer has specific genetic mutations.

Stage 4 Lung Cancer

  • Chemotherapy: Used to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells, chemotherapy can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.
  • Targeted Therapy and Immunotherapy: These treatments can be effective for certain genetic mutations or biomarkers.
  • Radiation Therapy: Used to relieve symptoms such as pain or difficulty breathing.
  • Palliative Care: Focuses on relieving symptoms and improving quality of life.

Keytruda: A Promising Immunotherapy

Keytruda (pembrolizumab) is an immunotherapy drug that has shown promise in the treatment of advanced lung cancer. It works by targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway, which tumors use to evade the immune system. By blocking this pathway, Keytruda helps the body’s immune system recognize and attack cancer cells.

How Keytruda Works

Keytruda is a type of monoclonal antibody that binds to the PD-1 receptor on T cells, a component of the immune system. This action prevents cancer cells from using the PD-1 pathway to hide from the immune system, thereby enabling the immune system to attack and destroy the cancer cells.

Effectiveness and Usage

Keytruda is approved for use in several types of cancer, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). It is often used in combination with chemotherapy or as a stand-alone treatment for patients whose tumors express PD-L1. Clinical trials have shown that Keytruda can significantly improve survival rates in patients with advanced lung cancer.

Early detection of lung cancer is crucial for improving treatment outcomes. Being aware of the subtle signs and symptoms can lead to earlier diagnosis and better chances of successful treatment. For those with advanced lung cancer, various treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy like Keytruda, offer hope and potential for improved quality of life. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized medical advice and treatment options.
